Complete Guide to Clean Installing macOS

A clean install erases everything and installs macOS fresh. This resolves persistent software issues and gives you a like-new Mac.

⚠️ CRITICAL - READ FIRST:
  • This ERASES EVERYTHING on your Mac
  • Back up ALL important data first!
  • Make sure you have your Apple ID password
  • Download any software installers you'll need
  • Note serial numbers/licenses for paid software
  • Set aside 2-4 hours for complete process

When to Clean Install

Step 1: Back Up Everything

  1. Time Machine Backup:
    • Connect external drive
    • System Settings → Time Machine
    • Complete full backup
  2. Manually Copy Important Files:
    • Documents
    • Photos (or ensure in iCloud)
    • Downloads you want to keep
    • Browser bookmarks (export)
    • Application settings if needed
  3. Deauthorize Apps:
    • iTunes/Music: Account → Deauthorize This Computer
    • Adobe Creative Cloud: Sign out
    • Any other licensed software
  4. Sign Out of Services:
    • iCloud: System Settings → Apple ID → Sign Out
    • iMessage
    • FaceTime

  1. Download macOS from App Store

Step 5: Install macOS

  1. From Recovery menu, select Reinstall macOS

  3. Agree to terms and conditions
  4. Select your erased disk (Macintosh HD)
  5. Click Install
  6. Mac will restart several times (30-60 minutes)
  7. Don't interrupt the process!

Step 6: Initial Setup

  1. Select country/region
  2. Choose keyboard layout
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi
  4. Migration options:
    • Restore from Time Machine: Gets all your data back
    • From Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk: Transfer from another Mac
    • Not Now: Start completely fresh (clean install)
