Speed Up Your MacBook

Is your MacBook running slower than it used to? Follow these proven tips to boost performance and get it running like new again.

1. Check Activity Monitor

First, identify what's slowing you down:

  1. Open Activity Monitor (Applications → Utilities)
  2. Click the CPU tab to see which apps are using the most processing power
  3. Click the Memory tab to check RAM usage
  4. Quit apps that are using excessive resources (select app → click X button)

2. Manage Startup Items

Apps that launch at startup slow down boot time and consume resources:

  1. Go to System Settings → General → Login Items
  2. Remove apps you don't need at startup by clicking the (-) button
  3. Keep only essential apps like Dropbox or Backup software

3. Free Up Storage Space

A full hard drive slows down your Mac. Aim to keep at least 15% free space:

  1. Click the Apple menu → About This Mac → Storage
  2. Click Manage to see recommendations
  3. Store in iCloud: Move large files to cloud storage
  4. Optimize Storage: Let macOS remove watched movies/TV shows
  5. Empty Trash Automatically: Remove files after 30 days
  6. Reduce Clutter: Review and delete large files
💡 Quick Win: Delete old iOS backups! Go to Finder → Preferences → Devices and remove old backups you don't need. They can take up 10-50GB!

4. Reset SMC (System Management Controller)

If your Mac has performance issues, battery problems, or fan noise:

For Macs with T2 chip (2018+):

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Press and hold power button for 10 seconds
  3. Release, wait a few seconds, then turn on normally

For Intel Macs without T2:

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Press Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds
  3. Release all keys, then turn on your Mac

5. Reset NVRAM/PRAM

Fixes issues with volume, screen resolution, and startup disk:

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Turn it on and immediately press and hold Option + Command + P + R
  3. Hold for about 20 seconds (until you hear startup chime twice)
  4. Release the keys

6. Disable Visual Effects

Reduce animations for older Macs:

  1. Go to System Settings → Accessibility → Display
  2. Enable Reduce Motion
  3. Enable Reduce Transparency

7. Update macOS and Apps

Updates often include performance improvements:

  1. Go to System Settings → General → Software Update
  2. Install all available updates
  3. Update apps from the App Store

8. Clear System Caches

Cached files can build up over time:

  1. Open Finder
  2. Press Command + Shift + G
  3. Type ~/Library/Caches and press Enter
  4. Delete folder contents (keep the folders themselves)
  5. Empty Trash

9. Disable FileVault (If Not Needed)

FileVault encryption can slow down older Macs. Only disable if you don't need disk encryption:

  1. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → FileVault
  2. Click Turn Off FileVault
⚠️ Warning: Only disable FileVault if your Mac doesn't contain sensitive data. It's a security feature!

10. Consider Hardware Upgrades

For older Macs (pre-2016), consider:

Note: Newer MacBooks have soldered components and can't be upgraded.
